CBD is becoming the biggest buzzword in the beauty business and it’s no wonder why! As a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent rich in omegas 3 and 6, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to provide quick relief and healing to skin of all types. Cannabinoid skincare products in the form of lotions, oils, salves, and bath salts are known to offer relief from pain, anxiety and depression, as well as possess antispasmodic, cell-regenerative, and anti-cell proliferative qualities. In its isolated form, CBD is considered to be non-psychoactive, and synergistically speaking, full spectrum CBD has a number of skin benefits that can be used as a preventative layer against more harmful medical issues.
Aside from diet and exercise, skin care products have a huge impact on an individual’s nutrition and ability to regulate hormone production.
I recently decided to take the leap and try fighting my predisposed estrogen dominance by transitioning to clean skincare products. Estrogen dominance is a common cause of many underlying diseases in women. As someone who personally suffers from endometriosis related hormone imbalances, body care regimens that are certified organic with anti-inflammatory properties and don’t make my skin rash, redden, or dry out are extremely important to my overall health. Over the course of a month, I went through all of my skin care and beauty products and tossed out anything with “unclean” ingredients. If you have a hormone imbalance or endocrine issues, it’s important to avoid products that contain fragrances, lead, parabens, diethylene glycol, sodium laurel sulfate, oxybenzone, mercury, and formaldehyde. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals affect the breakdown and elimination of hormones from our bodies. Hormone imbalances can trigger weight gain, mood swings, anxiety, loss of sleep, skin issues and estrogen dominance.
Transitions, in all aspects of beauty routines, can be financially daunting. After a couple weeks of research, I reached out to Crave Skin Care, who offers sample packs, as a way of inexpensively testing the waters. Janet, the founder of Crave, recommended that I try out their Virgin Skin Youth Serum in combination with their Salvation Phyto-Beauty Oil to help strengthen and fortify my skin barrier, so it wouldn’t be so sensitive. Happily I obliged and used their youth serum to moisturize my skin with its brightening mix of vitamins, antioxidants, and amino acids. Their Salvation beauty oil, comprised of 14 different plant oils, turmeric extract, rosehip, chia seed, black cumin and other natural sources of Vitamin A, B, C, & E, immediately soothed my skin and had long lasting effects. Their oil cleanser, cleverly titled War Paint Remover, is by far my favorite product from Crave’s collection and is quite possibly the most gentle and effective cleanser I’ve ever owned. I’m amazed at how easily it removed my makeup without irritating the surrounding skin.
Another CBD body care brand I really enjoy that’s new to the market is Mender. Mender’s Apothecary Body Essentials Collection is made from organic essential oils and full spectrum, non-GMO, pesticide free, hemp derived CBD. I was thrilled when I came across their 100% natural shea butter deodorant! Chemicals applied to our underarm area are effectively ingested and transported to organs in our chest through our lymph nodes. Even with that in mind, I’ve struggled to find a natural deodorant that feels comfortable and works properly. The first day I tried Mender’s CBD deodorant, I still felt fresh even after temperatures rose during a mid-day stroll in LA. It goes on silky smooth, isn’t sticky or gunky from build-up, blocks odor, and is toxin free. I honestly can’t imagine life without it now.
Not only are the ingredients in body products important to me, but also the ways that a product is made. HIGH Gorgeous is a vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, gluten-free brand infused with botanicals and made without parabens or sulfates. Since HIGH Gorgeous is based out of SoCal, I’ve been spoiled enough to get to shop their collection at Buds and Roses in Studio City. Their amazing light-weight lotion, Plain Jane, is fragrance free and penetrates deep into my skin. With 100mg CBD in a 4 oz container, Jane might be plain, but she’s skin deep in anti-inflammatory bliss. I recommend applying your body moisturizer within five minutes of your shower for an extra refreshed feel. Also worth mentioning is their 25mg cherry THC/THCA lip balm blended with coconut oil, cocoa butter, and aloe vera. My lips have serious dry issues and I’ve been pleased with the moisture retention from this cute lip balm. Don’t worry – you won’t get high!
Made From Dirt is another Socal company taking the high road and lab testing their 100% organic, paraben, phthalate, & BPA free CBD topicals. Seeing passing results of lab tests is usually what sells me on taking a chance on a CBD brand I’m not as familiar with. I was lucky enough to test the goods in person at a local event and took home a Stretchmark Salve for upkeep of my long legs. Shea butter, essential oils, tamanu oil and CBD are blended together in this salve as remedies for scars, rosacea, abrasions, psoriasis, stretch marks, insect bites, and sunburns. Tamanu oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory known as the “wound healer” because it encourages the generation of new tissues and healthy skin cells through an accelerated healing process. Besides the purity of their ingredients, I love the professionalism and transparency of this brand!
product. It’s not coincidence that brands devoted to a good cause are usually also good for you! There’s nothing wrong with exercising some self-care and putting some thought into what kind of products you are using on a daily basis. The personal care industry is effectively unregulated and thus, looking for non-toxic products made without a long list of harmful ingredients is essentially our own responsibility. Feel free to message me if you have any questions about CBD and if you know of other CBD skin care products I should try, I’d love to hear from you!
